The Classical Period ( 1750-1820)

The classical period is described as The Enlightenment.

Can anyone please check out what is the meaning of "Enlightenment"?PLease check out from the dictionary or from the net.

Answer please?

Classical style in music - emphasis on clarity, order and balance, simple texture, mainly in homophonic texture. (Student, feel free to add any features of classical period if you know any of them), use of alberti bass, etc...

THe four giants in the classical period .. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and J.C.Bach

Everyone can now enjoy and attend concerts because of the development of public concerts. In Baraque period, the aristocracy hire the composers to write music for them or for the royalty. Now, the composer can survive without being as an employee of these rich people and more people were exposed to music. The development of public concerts increase the popularity of orchestra. As a result of all these process, symphonies music became 'the pop music' of their days.

Popular works by composers.... the sonatas. symphonies and chamber music.

The Baroque period - Year 1600-1750

Which String instrument is a transposing instrument?

Violin, Viola, Cello or Double bass?
Look at these bars taken from Bach's Chorale BWV2.6. There are just harmony.

Can you spot any NCTs? Please state the bars and types of NCTs..

What is Non-Chord Tones?

Some people label Non-Chord Tones as NCTs, melodic decoration, non harmony note, etc....

Basically, they are the same meaning. Non-Chord Tones are notes that not belong to the chord.

You can add NCTs to make the melody more interesting and add tense to it, so that it doesn't sound booooooring....but too much NCTs will sound complicated. Dear students, make sure don't overdo it, yea..
Below are the different types of NCTs:
For Gd 6 ...
1. Passing note.... approached by STEP and left by STEP IN SAME DIRECTION
2. Auxiliary note....approached by STEP and left by STEP IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION
3. Changing note (Escape note)... characteristic NONE of above no.1 & 2 , on WEAK BEAT
4. Appoggiatura...characteristic NONE of above no.1 & 2 , on STRONG BEAT
5. Anticipation... approached by STEP or LEAP, left by SAME TONE
Gd. 7
6. Suspension... approached by SAME TONE, left by STEP DOWN
7. Retardation...approached by SAME TONE, left by STEP UP
Gd.8
8. Pedal point (tonic or dominant)..usually occurs in the BASS, a stationary pitch that begin as a chord tone, then becomes NCT as the harmonic change.

What is a transposing instrument?

Transposition is the writing of music at a different pitch than sounding pitch.
It is used in certain instruments to simplify notation making it easier to read by players.

These instruments are called “transposing instruments” who read a part that is transposed to a different interval than the concert pitch.

In other words, a written C4 (middle C) on the page will not produce a sounding C4 if the instrument is transposing, it will produce something else depending on the instrument.

Look at above example. The first example is in written pitch/transposed pitch (the one in E major key) . The 2nd example is in sounding pitch/concert pitch (the one in D major key)

How would we write this part for Clarinet in B-flat? Since the instrument is in B-flat, then we must transpose it by a Major 2nd lower.

What is Harmony?

The science of how we combine notes into chords, and how the chords work together, is called "harmony".

When we look at music with our analytical hats on, we can think about it in two different ways.

We can look at if from left to right - this is the melody and rhythm.

Or, we can look at it from top to bottom - this is the harmony
